If you took 2003′s freely downloadable Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and mashed it together with the Battlefield games, you might come up with something like Quake Wars. Of course, the whole business of the original Enemy Territory’s Allies and Axis have been replaced by the humans and Strogg from the Quake universe, but the basic nature of the gameplay is unchanged. Two opposing teams still duke it out while attempting to complete a series of objectives, though this time you can jump into a bunch of different vehicles and aircraft to carry out your assaults. The concept itself isn’t really new, but it’s put together extremely well, and its mission-focused gameplay will appeal to veterans of these types of shooters, as well as those who have previously been intimidated by them.

Though it’s been a generally lackluster period for PC action games, tactical shooters have had a great year. Between the ambitious Operation Flashpoint, the much-anticipated successor to the venerable Rogue Spear franchise, Ghost Recon, and the ongoing popularity of user-created mods such as Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, fans of the genre have had more good games to play than ever before. For better or worse, the genre has even gained its own massively multiplayer game with the release of WWII Online. It was only a matter of time, then, before budget publishers noticed the trend and capitalized on it. The result is Deadly Dozen, Infogrames’ entry into the previously nonexistent world of budget-priced tactical shooters. And true to the genre’s recent run of luck, it’s pretty darn good.

All of the claims you may have heard that Crysis could only run on nuclear-powered supermachines were greatly exaggerated. But if for some reason you worry that this stand-alone companion to the ultragorgeous first-person shooter will bring your PC to its knees, you should know that it’s highly scalable and ran smoothly on a number of machines during our testing. It also looks better, with clear attention given to the game’s artistic sensibilities and the lusher, denser environments.

Any discussion of 2007′s PC shooter Crysis inevitably turns to its graphics. It was–is–a beautiful game, boasting incredible technology that makes it one of the most lifelike adventures to date. For some, its excellence as a shooter is secondary, which is too bad: Crysis is a fun and challenging game that doesn’t rely on its technological wonders to make an impact. Now, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners get to experience these wonders for themselves, and they should be pleased to learn that the game holds up well, due in part to some interface tweaks pulled directly from Crysis 2.
